The Brief

• 2 garden planters required for vegetables and fruit
• 'Green' oak railway sleepers to be used
• Planters to also act as a physical divide between areas of the garden
• Planters to be level, square and parallel to existing fence and shed
• All fixings to be concealed on the interior

Other Special Requests

• A small gap between the fence and the planters to be concreted
• Existing turf laid to be dug over and removed
• Filling planters with soil to be completed by the customer at a later date

The Solution Design

• Front planters constructed 3 sleepers high
• Main rear planter constructed 2 sleepers high and connected to front
• Fixings drilled and recessed on the interior for top layer of sleepers

The Work Involved

• Clear area and dig out obstructing plants
• Peg out and agree the external dimensions
• Dig level channels for the first layer of sleepers
• Cut, lay and join the first layer of sleepers
• Mix and lay concrete between large planter and existing fence, with run off for rainwater
• Build up and fix the remaining layers of sleepers
• Dig over the inside of each planter, remove all turf
• Leave garden waste for later refuse collection
